Placental insufficiency

Formation and function of the placenta

The placenta is formed from the chorionic villis (at first tiny root similar foothills of the embryo) and from a mucosa layer built up by the uterus tissue. With the progressive development of the fetus it also grows. Among other things your task is the nutrition of the unborn. It also represents a respiration and excretory organ for the child. The unborn is provided with oxygen, nutrients and fluid by the placenta, the placenta "disposes" of childlike waste materials from its metabolism. The two blood circulations are separated by a thin membrane from each other, however. Don't mix a maternal and childlike blood himself.

Additional tasks of the placenta are the formation of pregnancy preserving hormones and of immune substances to the infection defense. In addition, it has a filter function for contaminants and pathogens. Some shoots and poisons, however, are placenta common. So she doesn't represent any 100 per cent protection.

The reduced substance alternating power of the placenta leads to an insufficient supply of the unborn at a placental insufficiency with nutrients. The placenta changes during the pregnancy and calcifications arise. With some women this ageing process of the placenta already appears in the pregnancy too early. The circulation of the placenta gets worse and the child gets worse supplied.

Results of a placental insufficiency

If the nutrition function of the placenta is restricted, the child of some grows, otherwise, however, ripens completely normally. After the birth it can rapidly gain weight. At an insufficient supply of the fetus with oxygen over a longer time period life-threatening damages can occur. Perhaps the birth must be immediately started or a cesarean section carried out.

Risks for a placental insufficiency

A placental insufficiency appears in large numbers:
  • Multiple pregnancies,
  • Gestosis or diabetes of the pregnant woman,
  • mothers who are underweight, fed and badly smoking,
  • feverish infections,
  • Bleedings or premature delivery tendencies during the pregnancy,
  • Assignment of the child.
References to a placental insufficiency

Perhaps symptoms of a possible insufficiency are to low fetus weight gain of the nascent mother failing to appear, reduced size increase of the womb, unfavorable lie of the fetus (transverse lie), a too little child and one water quantity.
