Herpes

There are two types of the herpes simple virus. The type 1 is primarily responsible for the lip vesicles, the type 2 causes genital herpeses. However, the type 1 also can also the lip vesicles cause genital infections at it and the type 2. It is typical of the viruses that they settle after a first infection in the nerve nodal points and slumber there inactivatedly. Under certain prerequisites, like stress or defense weakness, the virus can cause the infections with the typical disease features once more.

The viruses usually don't spread in the whole body (viremia). The unborn therefore catches it in the womb very rarely.

The predominant number of newborn child infections takes place at the birth. The virus also can be transferred by the close contact of the parents fallen ill to the infant (caution!)

The symptoms with the newborn child after infection in the birth canal are the followings:
  • Fever, vomiting, lethargy,
  • Inflammations of the brain accompanied by seizures, late heavy ones mental defects,
  • Inflammations of the eyes up to the blindness,
  • Skin exanthema,
  • Vesicle in the mouth,
  • Attack of the internal organs.
If the brain and internal organs of the newborn child are affected by the infection, the mortality is very high despite an antiviral medical treatment. If the children survive, then they have a high risk for permanent damages. Typical delayed effects of a herpetic infection are: little shape of the head, intelligence deficits, seizures and eye damages.

The infection risk for the mother can be reduced by safer sex measures considerably.

If a first infection of the pregnant woman appears, then she is with the virustatic aciclovir treated and once more with the medicine gives therapy as of the 30th pregnancy week shortly before the delivery. The medicine is allowed only for the third trimenon. If symptoms of a genital herpes infection appear shortly before the birth, then a cesarean section is carried out.

Is known to herpetic infections frequently appearing from the anamnesis (interview of the physician to illnesses gone ahead) for the attending doctor, so he can the virustatic be given prophylactically ten days before the calculated birth appointment.

There isn't a vaccination against the herpes virus . a prophylaxis with immunoglobulins and an aciclovir therapy is recommended with newborn childs whose mothers have gone through a herpes first infection shortly before the delivery.
