Cord prolapse

The complication of a cord prolapse appears (approx. 3%) only very rarely. This complication is given if the cord lies with an intact or jumped amniotic sac under the unborn one. The cord prolapse is a dreaded complication at a premature bladder jump. The cord is drawn in front of the head of the child by the undertow effect of the fetus water flowing out and the gravity to below.

The fetus presses the pelvis with its weight and compresses the cord. It stops its own blood and oxygen supply with that.

To the better understanding you read also about function and construction of the cord

By this compression of the cord a heavy insufficient supply of the child takes place within less minutes. It comes to heavy dyspnea and pulse weakness primarily under labors. The death of the child can be the consequence. You must certainly immediately give birth by cesarean section at a cord prolapse. Until there the midwife or the physician will try to shove the previous childlike part up by the vagina. The care of the child is ensured so again.

Function and construction of the cord

The cord is the transport route between the maternal and childlike organism. Through the around 60 centimeters long and 10 to 20 millimeters thick cord flow per day about 350 liters of fluid. It contains two thin arteries and a thick vein. The bloodstreams lead net of fine branchings within the placenta into one on the maternal side. They further lead at the unborn one to the abdomen of the baby and then into the liver and the heart. About the two arteries comes oxygen and nutrition into the circulation of the child. The vein transports back the oxygen-deficient blood and all waste materials to the mother. Both circulations are separated by a thin membrane, however. The substance exchange takes place at it. An intrauterine device shape has the cord and abknicken cannot do so lightly through this.
