Blepharitis

A blepharitis is an inflammation of the eyelid borders.

The causes of the inflammation can be mechanical stimulations by dust, smoke, sand or air conditionings. Also bacterial infections or skin illnesses (for example atopic eczema) can be the triggers.

The clinical picture appears as follows:

The eyelid borders are reddened and itch and burn, swollen. Little dandruff forms between the eyelashes. It can form also purulent crusts which can stick the eyelids together during sleeping. Sometimes the eyelid border glands and the eyelash root are concerned. The eyelashes also can be cancelled.

Go with your child to the physician if the inflammation doesn't improve in any case after few days.

Your treating physician will proceed as follows:

  • It is checked at difficult cases by a smear whether there is a bacterial infection. Perhaps antibiotics must be ordered (as an ointment or at heavy illnesses into tablet shape).
  • Visual defects are also the cause of the blepharitis possible. Your physician will therefore transfer them to an ophthalmologist.

So you help her child in addition:

  • Wash out the eyes of your child with a tepid, boiled water three till four times minimumly. Make the crusts sodden before you wipe them off. Use disposable washcloths. Cotton tips which were held into a fresh boiled water are also suitable for the remove of the crusts. (Use every cotton tip only once. You use several cotton tips per eye and you never dip a used cotton tip water > boiled into this bacterium pollution)!
  • Tepid compresses on the closed eyelids soothe the troubles.
  • Avoid stimuli triggering the illness.
There is the danger at blepharitises; that they appear again and again, the eyelashes are cancelled and the eyelid borders can heal up.
